Feast of the 7 Fishes

November 28, 2012 by Diniquette

As you know, I come from a big Italian family in Jersey. Every Christmas Eve we celebrate: The Feast of The Seven Fishes.  This feast is to (allegedly) commemorate the wait for the midnight birth of Jesus; which is why it is also called: The Vigil (La Vigilia).

I say allegedly because most Italians I know don’t know why we celebrate The Feast, we mostly do it because it’s tradition.  I’ve done this since birth, my parents have done this since birth, and so on and so on.  It’s a fabulous tradition that I highly recommend.

Our menu this year will be:

Fried Smelts

Octopus salad

Shrimp Cocktail (since I cook most of this feast, I need something easy)

Crab stuffed shells with spring peas and leeks

Ahi Tuna Nicoise

And we still need a 7th…….so any suggestions, please pass them along.

Thanks for reading.

  1. Barbara Barna Abel says:

Oysters on the half shell – elegant and easy. Smoked trout dip. My favorite salmon salad: poached/smoked/roe all clumped together in a light dressing. Or just a straight up simple roast salmon with pesto. Lobster risotto.
