Fun Fact Friday: Belmont Stakes

June 6, 2014 by Diniquette

So I have to confess….I love the ponies! This weekend is the Belmont Stakes, so I thought I’d share some facts about my 2 favorite things: New York and Horse racing:

*The Belmont Stakes is the oldest of the Triple Crown races; it predates the Preakness by 6 years and predates the Kentucky Derby by 8.

*The Belmont is also known as: “the run for the carnations”, because the winner is draped by a blanket of white carnations.

*The traditional theme song used to be: “Sidewalks of New York” but it was changed, (along with its traditional cocktail), to appeal to a younger crowd. The new theme song is: “NEW YORK, NEW YORK”…(I’m not sure if it’s Liza or Frank, but I’m Frank ALL THE WAY).

*The cocktail was changed from THE WHITE CARNATION to THE BELMONT BREEZE; the recipe is listed below.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Belmont Breeze:
1 1/2 oz Rye Whiskey
1/2 oz Harvey’s Bristol Cream
1/2 oz Fresh Lemon juice
1/2 oz Simple Syrup
1 1/2 oz Fresh Orange juice
Splash of Cranberry juice
Splash of lemon-lime soda
Splash of Club soda
5 Mint leaves
1 Mint sprig
1 Strawberry
1 Orange slice

Combine the first 7 ingredients and shake then strain into a chilled glass. Top off with the lemon-lime and club soda. Use the rest as garnish.
