My friend Rachel, (who is half Korean, half Sicilian and whole sassy), told me about this and it totally blew my mind.
Eggplants come in male and female form. How do you know if you have a male or female? Look at the bottom. If there is a brown circle it is male. If there is a long brown mark, (like a slash), then it’s female.
Which one should you use when making Parmesan? The male. This is why. A lot of people think eggplant is bitter; that’s because they’re eating the female. Female eggplants are full of seeds, (unless they are reproductively challenged; but that’s a story for a different blog), the seeds are meant to be bitter to NOT attract seed eaters…..those damn seed predators!
So the woman eggplants are bitter and sometimes rounder and the male eggplants have hardly any seeds and are perfect for consuming………..anti-feminist vegetable! 😉
