Since it is NATIONAL GAZPACHO AFICIONADO MONTH, (who knew), I thought we would talk about soup etiquette. Yup, there is such a thing:
* To eat soup: dip the spoon in sideways at the near edge of the bowl, then skim from the front of the bowl to the back. Sip from the SIDE of the spoon. No slurping, (unless you’re eating a soup dumpling then it’s absolutely acceptable and expected).
* To retrieve the last spoonful, tip the bowl AWAY from you to spoon up that last delicious bit.
* When you’re finished your soup, if you’re eating out of a bowl: place the spoon INSIDE the bowl with the handle facing the right side. If you’re eating out of cup: place the spoon on the underplate, never in the cup.
If you watch DOWNTON ABBEY, watch them the next time they’re having a dinner scene….they do this perfectly.
Thanks for reading.
