Today I wanted to discuss tipping; specifically, tipping on bottles of wine…..
There seems to be a school of thought that you don’t have to tip on a bottle of wine; I’m here to tell you that that thought is completely and utterly wrong. Let’s break it down:
*If you order a burger and a beer, would you tip on both of those items? Yes
*Same burger, but now you’ve ordered a glass of wine; would you tip on both of those items? Yes
So, if you’d tip on a bottle of beer and a glass of wine, why wouldn’t you tip on a bottle of wine?
LET ME BE CLEAR: when you dine at a restaurant, it is customary to tip on the pre-tax subtotal of EVERYTHING ON YOUR BILL! So if you spent $10 on a beer or $1200 on a bottle of LaTour, you tip a minimum of 15%-20% on all of it!
INSIDER TIP: if you are someone who does NOT tip on your bottles of wine, the managers make a note, on Open Table, under your reservation name…..so the next time you try to get a table, at your favorite hot spot, I can guarantee you it will be profoundly difficult.
Just do the right thing, and tip appropriately.
Thanks for reading.
